Across the whole country, no matter what industry anyone is in, companies are finding it hard to get staff.

Recruitment has currently dried up and our industry has gone into panic mode ?. Claiming ‘the industry has changed’ or ‘no one wants to work for anyone’ but this just isn’t true. The industry hasn’t changed!

KNOW WHO YOU WANT TO RECRUIT ?‍

Do you want a college leaver? Someone experienced? Or maybe an apprentice? Each one has their pros and cons. You need to work out how much spare time you have to train someone. What is your budget for wages? What is your long-term goal for that new team member? Answering these will help you decide who is going to be the right fit.

WHERE TO FIND THEM ?

Now you that know what type of team member you would like to recruit you will know where to find them. Anyone experienced is going to be hanging out more on Indeed, LinkedIn or with recruitment agencies. Those that are newer to the industry or completely fresh will be hanging out more on social media and at colleges. Put your time and money into the places where your perfect staff member will probably be looking. Connect and build a relationship with your local college too.

CREATE THE BUZZ ?

Make your job advert and description about them and make it exciting! We can be so quick to list off all the things WE want from someone. Yes, you can add this in too but prioritise what you offer to the potential employee. First start with what they are going to get from you. Maybe that’s great pay, flexible hours and a pension? Maybe you will offer a free gym membership. Have a think about all the benefits you can offer an employee and list them first. Lastly, what can you offer for their working hours which is attractive? Is that flexible working for mums or a 4-day week? Maybe you could push to every other Saturday off. Always put the business needs first but having more attractive hours will help your team productivity.

Your perfect team is out there! It’s better to hire slowly to find the right person rather than hire fast and get the wrong person.

In the piece Katie talks about how the pandemic has effected the future of the beauty industry and adds that she feels it is going to be super busy, then hit a small lull, before seeing the industry boom once again.

Katie also discussed how it has affected staff and clients.  Some clients are so used to not having beauty treatments that they might wait a while to come back while others can’t wait to get through the door.

Katie also felt that this is a great time to build your teams. There is a lot of incredible beauty therapists looking for a secure job right now.

Then lastly Katie was asked how we can pandemic proof our businesses.

Katie’s three top tips for salons coming out of lockdown were:

1. Get as much content as possible in this busy time with all the work you will be creating.
2. Raise your prices! If you haven’t already it’s a must with PPE costs, recuperating lost takings and inflation in day to day costs.
3. Whatever deal you made to yourself during Covid as a business owner, stick with it. Was that working less, building a team, stepping back, being there more for your family? Whatever it was, don’t lose sight of that now in the busyness of life.

Please introduce yourself, and tell the readers about your beauty training experience?

My name is Jenna. I live on the South Coast of England with my fiancé, and my dog. I have a beauty studio in Southampton, that specialises in lashes, brows and nails. I am so passionate about all things beauty – in particular, training others to step out of their comfort zones and learn a new skill, to provide a bright future for themselves and ultimately be their own boss!

What got you started in the beauty industry?

I have always been a fan of beauty and enjoyed regular beauty treatments. You would never catch me without lash extensions on! I have worked in the legal sector for over 10 years, and was primarily based in an office 5 days a week, working very long hours. Whilst I enjoyed this work, when I got engaged to my Fiance and started looking at our future together, I found myself questioning what my working life would look like when we started a family, which I knew I wanted to do in the near future. I took a lot of time researching options, and was told to look at doing things I enjoyed – lash extensions!

My intention was to train in lash extensions, and just work a few extra hours a week from home, to earn some extra pennies on the side and build up a small client base that I could continue in the future once we had children. I transformed my spare room into a beauty room, and off I went. Over a matter of months, my small client based kept growing, and I was lashing clients in my spare room most evenings and weekends! I couldn’t believe how quickly it grew. After about 6 months, I thought I would explore my options with renting a room in a salon, and I was lucky enough to secure a small treatment room in a local popular hairdressers. I worked every Saturday in the salon, and I was still working from home on the evenings! The demand was so much that I decided it was the right time to look for someone to work alongside me, so I found another lash artist to help with the overflow. Again, this grew so much, and after another 6 months, I was offered a salon space with 2 treatment rooms, to open a beauty salon. Fast forward to now, I now have 2 employees working for me, and a regular aesthetics nurse that holds clinics in my salon once a week! I am also a Trainer & Educator for KG Professional, holding training courses on both weekdays and weekends – which I absolutely love!

Where are your Southampton beauty courses located?

All training courses are held at my beauty studio – Glow Beauty Studio – which is situated at 1 Dart House, Neva Road, Southampton SO18 4JR. The studio is located just outside of the city centre.

What makes your Southampton beauty training different from other Southampton beauty courses?

Not only do I ensure the education provided to my students is of the highest standard, I also care about my students on a personal level and want to ensure they get the best out of their time with me. I go over and above when I train, to ensure that they leave their course not only feeling educated, but also confident and inspired to spread their lash wings and fly! I feel that I have gained so much invaluable knowledge throughout my beauty career, and being given an opportunity to share this with a student when training is exciting.

What can people who sign up for Eyelash courses in Southampton expect from training with you?

As a Classic Lash Trainer, I like to make all of my students feel safe and welcome in my studio. I like to create a safe space, that no question is a silly question, and my students feel that they get the most out of their time with me on the training day.

All students are provided with an extensive training manual, and a beautiful kit full of luxury products to get them started on their lash journey. This contains everything they need to get going, so they can leave the course on the day and start practising.

During the Classic Lash course, we will spend time going through the theory of classic lash extensions, to ensure the client understands the method behind the lashes, and is also fully educated on the safety of lashes. We discuss so many aspects of classic lashes – from products, styling, placement, client consultation – the lot!

Once I am confident that my student has understood the theory side of classic lashes, we move onto the practical element. For most students, this may be the first time they have ever picked up a set of tweezers before, so can seem very daunting, but my job is to provide confidence and ensure my students feel comfortable applying classic lashes. My aim of the practical side is to ensure that my student can go away and apply a full set of classic lashes, safely and correctly.

I also provide all of my personal knowledge when teaching my students, so I give them hints and tips along the way of things that work for me, and anything I feel that can make their job easier.

After a course, my door is always open for a student to come to me with any questions, problems or advice they need!

What can people who sign up for Brow and Lash Lift courses in Southampton expect from training with you?

As a Brow & lash Lift Trainer, you can expect to leave my course on the day feeling competent and confident in performing either one of these gorgeous treatments!

I will ensure that you fully understand the theory behind these treatments – the health and safety of our clients lashes/brows is key, and that you are confident understanding what you are doing, before we carry out the treatments.

I will then guide you through the practical side, to ensure that you are able to perform a perfect brow / lash lift on your client. I will give you all of my hints and tips that I have learnt along the way, to ensure you perform the best treatment that you can! I am there to answer any questions that my students have, along with providing practical advice that my students want to know.

After a course, my door is always open for a student to come to me with any questions, problems or advice they need!

What can people who sign up for Russian Volume training in Southampton expect from training with you?

When training in Volume Lashes, you will already be qualified in Classic Lash extensions, and therefore should be familiar with the basis of lash extensions. I always spend time recapping over the basics and theory of lash training as a refresher, to ensure that my students are familiar with the contents of this side of the course, and we then move onto learning about volume lashes.

We spend a lot of time learning about volume lashes – what they are, how you make them, the different techniques, safe procedures, eye styling etc, before we move onto the practical side.

I am on hand to help you make beautiful handmade fans, which I will then teach you to apply safely to your client. Using a model, we then spend time together creating a beautiful set of Russian volume lashes.

All of my clients should leave the course feeling confident in volume lashes, so much so that they can leave on the day with their luxury KG Professional kit, and start lashing clients straight away!

Which of KG’s professional beauty products do you recommend and which could you not live without?

One of my ultimate favourite products from KG Professional is their Lash Shampoo. This is my go-to product every time, and my clients also love it! As a lash artist, it helps ensure that my clients lashes stay clean and healthy, and it is a fab product to retail so my clients can purchase it to use at home too. KG Professional also do a gorgeous little lash cleaning brush that compliments the shampoo perfectly!

Another favourite KG product of mine, is the KG Protein Remover Pads. I love using these before applying both lash extensions, or performing a lash lift. It is a quick and easy cleansing treatment that removes make-up, oils and dirt before going ahead with the treatment. They come in a handy little pot too, which means they keep for a very long time!

Any final thoughts for people unsure about signing up for our Southampton beauty courses?

I never knew how much training in lash extensions could change your life. What started as a side hobby for me, has now blossomed into a fully blown business, that is continuing to grow every day. The opportunities with having these skills under your belt, are endless.

I would like to introduce you to Georgia, and with permission, share some of her journey and together cheer her on and excitedly watch her grow and expand.

Georgia rents space within Talias Beauty Salon who actually nominated her.

Georgina grew up as a Young Carer for her Mum from the age of 11 years old and cared for her for 7 years. Georgia’s Mum suffered from severe mental and physical illnesses. Each day Georgia would solely provide endless care for her Mother and use her young nursing skills to change her colostomy bag.  Georgia’s Father worked away in London returning at weekends which provided much needed help.  At the age of 17 Georgia’s Father began working from home and for the following two years would support with the care of Georgia’s Mother.  However, the difficulties experienced took its toll and her Father became dependent on alcohol.

When Georgia was 19 years old she was working in a salon and returned home to find police cars outside her home.  The Police did not allow her access and she was informed that her Mother had taken an overdose and sadly passed away.  Georgia told me that her Father at that time was working in Ireland and her sister was living outside of the family home.  She described how she had to call them and those two calls were the hardest conversations she has ever had to make.

Georgia felt numb, did not want to let others down, and the very next day was wanting to return to work, although her Boss did not allow this. Georgia eventually began therapy and was diagnosed with PTSD and anxiety.

Georgia started work in a new salon Talia’s and her dream was to become self employed.  This became a reality in the beginning of 2020 just before the pandemic. She used all her savings on training and stock whilst maintaining the household expenses.  Her Father had been made redundant and had accrued debt from his drinking and gambling addictions.

As Georgia had become self employed when the pandemic hit she was not entitled to any financial support.  The difficulties she faced forced them to sell the family home and move into rented accommodation.

Third lockdown later Georgia faced again no income, a new business and ongoing financial responsibilities to maintain.

Georgia needs a break!  She wishes to invest the money from the ‘Giveaway’ into more training and stock for when she is able to start opening again.  It is her hope that eventually will provide more income for herself and her Father.

It is my hope that with my mentoring support I will be able to support Georgia to get her business off the ground, build and watch her get the success she deserves and I cannot wait.

I am so grateful for seeing in this New Year with my health, my family and all my businesses still standing even if we have lost over £150k this year. For me that is truly blessed. I need to give back, I have a desire to support and help someone where this opportunity could make a difference to their life. Someone who will believe in their vision, give them the push they need and support them for a year in their business.

Do you have a business mentor or have you ever thought about having a mentor?I strongly believe it’s one of the key things that is crucial to have within your business. If you don’t already have a business mentor then I highly encourage you to research it and find someone you look up to, to potentially work with.
All business owners know it can be very lonely in business and It’s very hard to find someone that understands your struggles and needs. And that can give you real advice in situations, information that friends and family might not know. A mentor is your ‘go to’ person, someone that is exceptionally experienced in all situations.

A lot of salon owners are scared to step out as usually they are the biggest earners in the salon and have the biggest clientele. Then they are working day and night. Day in the salon and at night on the business which usually leads to them reaching breaking point.
They fear that if they stop working in the salon that their clients will go elsewhere. But, I teach them how to keep all of their clients and also how to move them over to other therapists ensuring that the salon keeps all of those clients!

I am confident that I can bring them an extra 20 plus new clients in the first few weeks. I am also confident I can make them happier within their working life, which will reflect their personal life which will give them more free time.

Business mentors are not at all cheap and the reason why many people do not have them, but they will make a huge impact on your business and your life. Salon owners: stepping out of the salon and working on your business objectives.

One of the main subjects I am questioned about the most is working on the business side of things rather than working in the actual salon, and the business side can be rather daunting at times. I really enjoy doing treatments as they are my passion and the main reason I started my business, I love talking with my clients, working alongside my team and most of all I love lashing and making clients feel beautiful.
