There are so many factors that could be affecting that. It could be their aftercare (or lack of! 🙊), our preparation, their lifestyle or environmental changes… the list goes on!

But one thing we can make sure of, is that we’re using a high quality glue! The retention pic below speaks for itself, before (top) after (bottom) 2 and a half week infill.

KG Original glue aka Red Top; it was our first ever adhesive we brought out over 10 years ago. Since we brought out this glue it has never been changed or altered… and it never will!

There’s a reason it’s one of our best selling products out of our whole range. This glue is perfect for all lash technicians whether you are a beginner starting out in your lash journey or an advanced lash artist. Your clients will be back every two weeks with fabulous retention meaning happy client and happy lash artist! 😁

Don’t just take our word for it…

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
This is a game changer. I changed to this adhesive after struggling with my usual ones. It makes application easier with a perfect setting time and my clients retention rates have improved dramatically. 100% recommend.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I’ve been using the KG RED TOP lash glue for around 3 years now and have never had any issues with it. The retention my clients get from this glue is insane. Highly recommended.

A thorough eyelash client consultation is integral to you, and your business as it will set you apart from the rest plus demonstrate excellent customer service and customer care. Sadly, a lot of lashers do not do a Lash Consultation prior to the customers appointment, it doesn’t take long and can easily be done when your customer comes in for her patch test. At the same time, you can ask for a small deposit, thereby securing her appointment and ensures your time is paid for, this deposit can be deducted from her lash appointment on the day. Often times lash artists don’t do this, not everyone has the same eye shape or can wear the same style lashes.

This is one of the topics that we teach at KG Professional, to be the best and offer your customer a premium service when they come to you for lashes, after all when they leave your salon, they are your walking talking advertisement for your business and your skills.

The Client Consultation can cover important questions and allows you to gather all of her contact details prior to her appointment as well as the patch test.

Know Your Eyelash Client

Take the customers contact information, name, email, contact number so that you are able contact her. Due to GDPR Regulations 2018 you must ask her permission and explain the reason why you are collecting the data, and these are for her Health & Safety records for treatments and the patch test you perform for insurance purposes too. D.O.B helps you to provide age-appropriate services. The information that you obtain may never be shared by 3rd parties. Make sure she has your contact information too.

Essential lashing questions and the reasons why they are asked

  • Does your customer wear glasses? If she is having lash extensions applied, then ask her to put her glasses on as you will have to ensure the lashes you apply do not hit the glasses when she wears them. So, check the distance between the glasses and her natural lash in the centre of her eye before you start. Normally the longest you can apply in this area is 11mm – but always check.
  • Does she need to use the ladies? If your customer needs ‘to go’ right in the middle of her lash application, this is really challenging for you, because you will need to remove the eye pads before hand and afterwards reapply them and this can often add a good 10 minutes to your treatment. You might have clients back-to-back; this can cause delays for everyone and it isn’t fair to keep your next customer waiting. Sometimes it cannot be avoided but just check before she lays on your beauty bed.
  • Is she claustrophobic? This is a really important question before the customers appointment as some customers think that lash extensions can be applied with their eyes open, and you must make sure that she understands the procedure time and that she might have to keep her eyes closed for as long as 3 hours (dependent on what style she has asked for). If she cannot, then don’t turn her away, offer her another treatment more suitable to her needs.
  • Is she pregnant? It is safe to apply lashes to pregnant women, however you have to ensure the Health & Safety of your client and her unborn baby. Your treatment will need to be adjusted especially in the later stages of pregnancy. Be flexible regarding your treatment times for your pregnant clients as this will be a mark of a true professional, your kindness and help will reap rewards by retaining that customer after the birth.   Please see our guide on lashing for pregnant clients below.
  • Is your customer receiving any medical treatment? Some medications can affect the adherence of the lash glue such as thyroxine for thyroid problems, eye creams, eye drops etc. Just check with your client and make her aware there might be retention issues, however you can easily adjust as you familiarise yourself with her lash cycle.
  • Upper or Lower Eye Surgery? This is now a common practice, and many women are having surgery to remove loose skin around the eyes. If your customer has had this operation check her eyes close properly and the water line meets ensuring the eyes are sealed preventing the fumes from the glue entering the eye.
  • Does she have any sensitivity to make up or skin products? If she does then this is a red flag for you to ensure her patch test is mandatory. All patch tests should be a between 24-48 hours.
  • Has she had an allergic reaction to eye pads or micro-pore tape in the past? If she does then these products should all be part of your patch test procedure and again mandatory. If she is allergic to the eye pads then you can try a thin layer of a barrier cream under the eye area which will stop the pad touching the skin directly, however for micro-pore tape you will not be able to use it.
  • Does your client suffer from Hay Fever? If she does then ask her to take an antihistamine before her appointment it is impossible to apply lashes to watering eyes, and very uncomfortable for the client and stressful for you too.
  • Redness in the eye area? If there is any redness around the clients’ eye area, this can be caused by an eye infection or eczema or psoriasis, therefore she will be treating it with some kind of medication. If this is the case, just apologise and say you cannot apply lashes until her eyes have healed. If it’s red don’t touch it!
  • Is she between 16-18 years old? Check with your insurance company the minimum age you can lash a customer without a guardian present. Most Insurance Companies say 16 is the minimum age without a parent or guardian present, also check their rules on patch testing as not every insurance company is the same.

Eyelash application:  Important points to be aware of for pregnant ladies.

  • Re patch test if your client is pregnant as her sensitivity may have changed and she might now have an allergic reaction, when she didn’t before.
  • Appointment duration can be 2-3 hours therefore you must ensure she is able to lay down for this long, and this becomes more difficult in the later stages. You must allow for her to lay in an elevated position if necessary, move, readjust her position or even for her lay on her side while you lash her, but be mindful of your own lashing position.
  • Allow for extra appointment time as your client might need to use the ladies more often, and your patience is important.
  • If she is unable to lie down for a complete set, you may need to take breaks, but again this adds to your appointment time. Offering her ‘premade’ lashes or faster lashing styles such as classics can be a life saver for you both, however she might need to come in more often for infills.
  • Be aware that hormonal changes can cause hair and lash loss in some pregnancies, if this is the case you cannot carry out her treatment. Again, don’t lose your client offer her another treatment instead.
  • Lash retention can also be an issue, and this can be due to hormonal changes so she might have to visit you more often.

Things to assess before your client’s eyelash appointment and what you should note

  • Natural length of lashes
  • Natural curvature
  • Eye shape
  • Discuss lash design choices
  • Chosen lash extension lengths & thickness
  • Lash choices – classic, volume, mega volume

For eyelash technicians, one of the most important things to consider when you start lashing (and one of the most overlooked) it is your own health and comfort.    It’s vitally important to think about your body as bad seating position and bad posture can cause serious pain in the shoulders and neck area in the future.

A full set of lashes can take up to 3 hours to apply and you are sitting in one position for this length of time, think about it, if you are lashing several clients all day, the hours stack up.

Over the years I have learned the hard way, because I just didn’t know and wasn’t taught how important positioning myself properly while lashing, so here are a few tips that we teach during your training with

KG Professional that will help to keep you comfortable while you are doing the job you love.  Here are our top beauty tips and things to consider when it comes to comfortable lash application.

  • Customer positioning: Make sure your customer’s head is right at the edge of your bed, the top of her head should be in line with the edge of the bed. If your customer is too far down the bed, you will have to lean forward, and your shoulders will have to be raised to reach her and this can cause shoulder pain. So, make sure her head is at the edge of the bed with her chin up so you can clearly see her lash line, you should be sitting as close to the top of her head as possible. Making sure your customer is comfortable the less she will move!
  • Stool and bed height: Get yourself an adjustable stool as your customers come in all sizes and you really need to be positioned above the client’s head, you don’t want to lift your shoulders too much while lashing. Your elbows should be in line with the customer’s ears, if you have to raise your shoulders continually to do this then you are sitting too low. Some beauty beds are height adjustable, make sure that it is the right height for you, if it is too high your customer will be too high for you to reach her comfortably. If you have a bed that is not height adjustable then get the best quality height adjustable stool you can afford so you are able to sit above her head.
  • Slouching: Be mindful of slouching, because your back curls forward and your shoulders roll forward and this can lead to pain in either your shoulders or neck. Sit with your back straight directly above the client’s head. If you get the burning in your shoulders, you are slouching. You can purchase a back strap that is designed to stop you slouching, I have one but only use it when I am lashing for long periods of time.
  • Take A Break: If you are lashing all day ‘back-to-back’ give yourself a few minutes to stretch between customers, it doesn’t take long but your back will love you for it.

There is an exercise perfect for the whole back Y-W-L-T. Sounds crazy but it works, standing raise your arms up above your head in the shape of a ‘Y’ thumbs facing backwards really stretch and hold for 20 seconds, next bring your arms down elbows to back of your waist, palms facing up ‘W’ hold for 20 seconds, then keeping your elbows in by your waist drop your arms into the shape of an ‘L’ hold for 20 seconds lastly, stretch your arms out completely into the ‘T’ shape, fell that stretch and hold for 20 seconds.

I have been lashing for over 12 years now and take my back health seriously, you aren’t invincible and if you experience back pain treat yourself to a monthly massage or visit a chiropractor.
