Over the years I have picked up quite a few tips and figured many out through experience.  Lashing is a skill that I am very proud of but when I started lashing in 2009 the lash industry was in its infancy and there was very little advice or support, boy did I make mistakes, but I didn’t have a mentor to help or train with a company that offered support as we do here at KG Professional.

Lashing is a skill that doesn’t come overnight you have to work at it, just being a good lash artist isn’t the whole thing, it takes time and patience to build a business and client base, whether you are working from home or have your own salon, so if you want to be one of the best put in the groundwork, practice makes perfect, but learn from others as we all started where at the same place.

Here are a few eyelash application tips that I lash by and am happy to pass on, but remember these are just some handy tips, not ‘the process’.

25 Handy Eyelash Application Tips

• Prep before customer arrival, saves time
• Do a thorough lash consultation before you start and take a photograph before & after
• For new clients check patch test and note results for insurance purposes
• Check the customer doesn’t need to use the ladies before you start, time is money
• Check time with the client to make sure she knows how long the appointment will take; you can’t be expected to do a full set of volume in an hour
• Make the customer as comfortable as possible on the beauty bed
• If using tape, make sure you detac well, the warmth of her skin will make the tape stickier
• Check lash symmetry, where the lashes start and end on both eyes, check for gaps and lash amounts
• Clean the whole eye area, use a good primer
• Shake that glue for a good 45 seconds
• Always start on the most difficult eye first
• Work on the inner corners of the eyes first as this is the most challenging area of the eyes
• Map your set, make it easier on you when changing lengths
• Lift the lid when working with layers to check the lashes and placement throughout
• Check for stickies throughout the treatment and at the end
• Use your tape to lift and move skin or separate lashes, make it easy on yourself
• Have everything you need close at hand
• Check room humidity, if you are having trouble with your glue that may be the reason
• Keep an eye on time as talking distracts
• When removing the pads and tape carefully supporting the skin always
• Check the clients lashes for errors before you give her the mirror
• Remind the customer of the after care
• Upsell retail products such as lash shampoos, brushes, lash serums
• Book in her refill appointment
• For new clients follow up with a courtesy call or text the next day, shows excellent customer service

Keeping your client comfortable while applying lashes of any kind is one of the most important considerations for any lash technician.

Of course there are comfortable beauty beds and not so comfortable beauty beds, some are completely flat, and some are adjustable, however, your customer is required to lay in one position for a long period of time and this can be a problem, because as soon as she starts feeling stiff, she will start moving, so making her as comfortable as possible as this will certainly help you.

Here are some handy client comfort tips that we recommend at KG Professional.

• Knee roll: A knee roll placed under her knees will help support the lumber area of her back and is perfect for those customers who find it difficult to keep their legs still.

• Neck Pillow: There are many on the market now, but these are well designed keeping your clients head in one position as well as her neck supported. You can still move the clients head left or right when lashing but this neck pillow stops the client moving while supporting her at the same time.

• Lumber Pillow: Some customers need a little more lumber support than others, and a lumber pillow is flat on one sit but arched on the other, and perfect to slide under their back for added comfort. If you don’t have a pillow, then a small hand towel folded works well too.

• Blanket: As your customer lies on your beauty bed her body temperature will drop so offer her a blanket for added comfort. You can buy lightweight blankets that can be easily washed, or disposable sheets that can be placed between the customer and the blanket stopping the blanket from touching the clients clothing.

• Shoes: Always ask your customer to take off her shoes, some are reluctant to do so but I always explain they will be lying down for a long period and I want them to be as comfortable as possible. If they still don’t want to take their shoes off, then place some couch roll by their foot area.

• Always sanitise your beauty bed between clients, fabrics can be easily sanitised with an antibacterial spray that is now readily available.

Getting the best retention from your clients lash extensions

There is nothing more frustrating when you do a beautiful set of lash extensions, then your client returns in two weeks time with hardly any lashes left.

We generally say within our training courses, that your client should come back for an infill and have 50% of lashes left on.

Anything less than 50% should really be classed as a full set as you just won’t get them full enough in the time thats booked out for an infill.

So how can you as a lash artist make sure your clients lashes have the best retention?

• It is all in the prep. If you don’t prep the natural lash right then the retention is going to be poor. This is on the full set of lashes or on an infill. To do this you need to make sure you use the KG Protein wipes on a full set. These protein wipes will clean the lashes and prime the natural lashes at the same time. Remember, you need to make sure you get right at the base of the lashes and make sure squeaky clean. A lot of lash artists just think of the top of the natural lashes, but we apply the lash extensions as close to the base as possible. So you need to make sure the lash line is clean.
• If your client is in for a lash infill, then you cannot use the protein wipes. You need to use the lash shampoo. This is the perfect product to use on clients and also for your clients to use at home in with there normal skincare routine.  Read more about our lash shampoo, including how to use it here.
• Make sure your not applying lashes to long. If they are too long for the natural lash, they will be too heavy which means bad retention.
• Bond the lash correctly. Make sure you’re applying the lash extension flat to the natural lash and bond it at least 1mm to the base. If not bonded correctly to the natural lash they will not last well.
• Use the right amount of glue. Too much glue will cause you to have isolation issues as you will have a lot of “stickies” Plus will be irritating for the client. If you use not enough glue the bond will not be strong enough. Pick a glue that suits your lashing style. We have our red top glue which is our best seller and suits everyone at all experience levels. Then we have our platinum glue for experienced and fast lash artists. Then for those that love a clear glue, we also have our transparent glue.
• Give the correct aftercare. Aftercare with any beauty treatment is so important. In our training courses our educators make sure you are clear on all the aftercare you need to give your client and how to get it across. If you don’t stress the aftercare to your client, then how do they know how to look after that treatment and help the treatment last like it should?

Then how can your clients make sure they help have the best lash retention..

• Clients need to make sure they follow the aftercare at home that you have given them.
• Clients need to make sure they are washing their lashes regularly with the KG Lash Shampoo. If they come to see you for an infill appointment with clean lashes, this will give you more lashing time and better retention.
• If there is a problem with their retention, to contact you as soon as there is a problem so you can amend their appointment rather than not having enough time on their next appointment to fill them up.

Remember, good retention = happy client and happy lash artist.

How to wash your lash extensions

Educating your client on how to wash their lash extensions at home is extremely important. Keeping their eyes clean between an eyelash appointments will keep their lashes free from any bacteria building up and eye infections. Having their lash extensions completely clean on an infill is going to help you save time on their appointment as you can go straight into an eyelash top up but will help their retention on their lash extensions.

What is retention?

Retention is how long the lash extensions last on the client. If a client can’t hold onto their lash extensions and they come to your salon with not many lashes left, they have bad retention. If your client always come to you with 50% or more lashes left on, then they have good mention. Reasons why a client will have bad retention can be down too many things. A few of them reasons can be:

– Clients lashes not clean and prepped before you apply their full set of extensions.
– Clients lashes not clean on an infill – Then you are applying extensions onto of a layer of dirt/oils.
– Client has naturally oily lashes. In this case you can switch to our Platinum Lash glue. This is really strong and perfect for this type of client.
– Lash artist not applying the extensions correctly.
– Client is a picker. You want to stress the correct aftercare to your client.

How to clean lash extensions from home

When learning eyelash extensions, one of the tricky parts can be applying the eye patches. Getting that perfect placement can be a little tricky and it takes practice.

At KG Professional we always prefer to use eye patches rather than micropore tape directly on the skin. It is less harsh on the skin and more pleasant for the client. Once you have applied the eye patch you can then secure it with the micropore tape if needed.

Some clients can have tricky inner lashes. We don’t want to miss these lashes out as it is very important to get that finished look.

To do this, you would use micropore tape to pull the lid outwards. This then exposes them inner lashes that are harder to get.

Please make sure you de-tack the micropore tape first to take the stickiness away. We don’t want to damage or hurt the clients skin.

If the client has heavy eyelids, you can use the tape in a different direction towards you. This makes the lash line more visible and easier to apply the lash extensions.
