CANCELLATIONS DRIVING YOU MAD? ?

Our industry has been hit hard with no shows and cancellations. What are you doing within your business currently to try and prevent this as much as possible?

48 HOUR CANCELLATION POLICY

Most of us have a 24-hour cancellation policy. So first of all, I suggest you up this to 48 hours (if you haven’t already!). This gives you an extra day to fill the space and get clients in for patch tests if needed. If you don’t have a policy in place at all, then you need to put one in place asap ?‍. You can’t complain about clients cancelling if you have nothing in place.

POLICIES

Don’t have a policy in place if you are not going to stick with it. You have to be very clear in your wording and to your teams when a client will be let off a fee. To be honest it is easier to have a policy in place whatever the reason unless it’s a complete emergency ?. This way you are protected in most cases, but everyone also knows where they stand.
Many of us are people pleasers and feel awful taking any fees from a client that does cancel, or worried ? they will leave a bad review. You have to remember you are running a business, take yourself and your income seriously and others will take it seriously too.

DEPOSITS

This isn’t anything new, but many of you still aren’t doing this ?. You need to make sure you take deposits. With software providers this is normally a really easy process now and takes it out of your hands. If you steer people to book through your app or website, they could then have to pay a deposit to be able to book. If you make this a fee that covers your cancellation fee, then you are never going to be out of pocket again. Remember you can take payments over the phone ? too which then means every single appointment you can have covered. If anyone cancels you then have their fee plus hopefully a client in the space they cancelled, which means you’re better off if someone cancels.

Check out my post on Instagram @kg_katiegodfrey showing the amount of money you can lose a day, month and year. It is a professional way to be able to share and show clients, so they understand more. Many people don’t understand the effect it has on businesses let alone small businesses.

Katie left school at 13 after being bullied, but this only made her more determined to succeed in life. Judging Process

• We believe in fairness so Award entrants are not asked to beg for votes in order to win.
• Entries are objectively assessed by a panel of expert judges who are specially selected professionals in their field.
• Judges will use a 1-10 scoring system with 10 being the highest score for each criteria. The criteria are the questions that you are invited to answer.
• Scores are based on our judge’s objective view of the evidence or response to the question (being the criteria).
• Judges’ decisions are final and are NOT subject to debate. No appeals will be accepted.

Thank you to everyone that applied for the ‘Giveaway’ and shared with me.  You were all incredible and I was humbled and inspired by you all and wished that I was in a position to support you all, I really do.

I would like to introduce you to Georgia, and with permission, share some of her journey and together cheer her on and excitedly watch her grow and expand.

Georgia rents space within Talias Beauty Salon who actually nominated her.

Georgina grew up as a Young Carer for her Mum from the age of 11 years old and cared for her for 7 years. Georgia’s Mum suffered from severe mental and physical illnesses. Each day Georgia would solely provide endless care for her Mother and use her young nursing skills to change her colostomy bag.  Georgia’s Father worked away in London returning at weekends which provided much needed help.  At the age of 17 Georgia’s Father began working from home and for the following two years would support with the care of Georgia’s Mother.  However, the difficulties experienced took its toll and her Father became dependent on alcohol.

When Georgia was 19 years old she was working in a salon and returned home to find police cars outside her home.  The Police did not allow her access and she was informed that her Mother had taken an overdose and sadly passed away.  Georgia told me that her Father at that time was working in Ireland and her sister was living outside of the family home.  She described how she had to call them and those two calls were the hardest conversations she has ever had to make.

Georgia felt numb, did not want to let others down, and the very next day was wanting to return to work, although her Boss did not allow this. Georgia eventually began therapy and was diagnosed with PTSD and anxiety.

Georgia started work in a new salon Talia’s and her dream was to become self employed.  This became a reality in the beginning of 2020 just before the pandemic. She used all her savings on training and stock whilst maintaining the household expenses.  Her Father had been made redundant and had accrued debt from his drinking and gambling addictions.

As Georgia had become self employed when the pandemic hit she was not entitled to any financial support.  The difficulties she faced forced them to sell the family home and move into rented accommodation.

Third lockdown later Georgia faced again no income, a new business and ongoing financial responsibilities to maintain.

Georgia needs a break!  She wishes to invest the money from the ‘Giveaway’ into more training and stock for when she is able to start opening again.  It is her hope that eventually will provide more income for herself and her Father.

It is my hope that with my mentoring support I will be able to support Georgia to get her business off the ground, build and watch her get the success she deserves and I cannot wait.

Virginia Rizzi heads up the affiliate marketing team at the digital marketing agency Glass Digital. Here, she shares her expertise to help your salon gain sales from affiliate channels, without having to offer voucher codes.

If you’ve recently started welcoming clients through your doors again, you’ll be looking for ways to stand out against the competition and bag more appointments or sales. An affiliate marketing strategy can really help with this, as it will get your business’s name in front of more people.

One of the most popular affiliate marketing models involves offering voucher codes that give customers a discount but, after closing your salon during lockdown, you might not be in a position to reduce your profit margins in this way.

It’s still possible to use affiliate marketing to promote your services, though. Here, I’m going to outline three different techniques you can use, which should help to get more people through your doors.

What is affiliate marketing?

If you aren’t familiar, affiliate marketing is an area of advertising where you pay a publisher — perhaps this is an online magazine, voucher site, or Instagrammer — a small commission if they drive people to your site and those visitors then book and pay for an appointment.

Almost 90% of advertisers think that affiliate marketing should be an element of any marketing strategy, and it’s expected that the industry will be worth $6.8 billion (£5.3 billion) by the end of this year (Digital Global). So, it’s definitely an area of marketing that’s worth delving into. Here are some strategies you could try.

Work with local online influencers

Influencer marketing is huge right now, and you can harness its power by working with online personalities to promote your services. In the age of Instagram, most of your target audience are likely to follow people whose lives or wardrobes they aspire to have. And this will also stretch to the makeup they’re using and the beauty treatments they get. You can capitalise on this to secure more appointments.

If you know of any local online influencers, contact them to ask if they would be interested in a free beauty treatment. In return, you can provide them with an affiliate link that they can post on their blog, Instagram, or anywhere else they have an audience. Whenever anyone books and pays for an appointment with you through that link, the influencer will receive a small commission.

Affiliate marketing is cost-effective, because you won’t usually pay anything until you sell appointments or products, and the amount paid to any influencers you work with will be a very small percentage of your takings. You will also have full control over what percentage you want to offer.

Secure reviews in online publications

Have you thought about inviting journalists and bloggers to your salon for complimentary treatments that they can then review on their platforms? This is quite similar to influencer marketing in that you’ll invite someone down to your salon in exchange for an affiliate link on their social media feed or website. However, an in-depth review of their experience will also be part of the deal.

Securing online reviews can be a great way to attract more customers, because it will help you reach a larger audience and give them a clear idea of what they can expect from your business. This is particularly important right now when people want to know that they’ll feel safe when they visit a salon. Journalists and bloggers will be able to let their readers know what your service is like and how seriously you’re taking Covid-19 precautions. You’ll then be rewarded with more sales, and the publication will be happy with their commission.

Partner with cashback sites

Another option you have is to advertise your services via cashback sites. These use an affiliate model that means, if someone books and pays for an appointment through a link on a cashback site, the platform will receive a small commission, and they’ll also share this with the customer. As a result, you should secure more bookings, the site you’re advertising on will get a small cut, and the customer will receive a slight discount, too.

Securing a space on cashback sites can do wonders for increasing awareness of your brand. TopCashback is one of the most popular platforms, which boasts nine million users. So, promoting your services through these kinds of websites can really help to get your name out there. Customers will also receive a small discount, which could well be the incentive they need to book an appointment with you, rather than a competitor. But, because their discount will only be a very small percentage of the usual cost of the treatment, you won’t be losing the 10–20% that often comes with offering voucher codes.

Affiliate marketing can help to get more people through your salon doors now that they’re open again. While voucher codes that offer discounts are often used as part of an affiliate marketing campaign, it’s completely understandable if you’re hesitant to offer significant discounts using voucher codes. The techniques I’ve outlined here should help you to get the best of both worlds.
